We Real Cool

Gwendolyn Brooks

   The Pool Players.
        Seven at the Golden Shovel.
            We real cool. We
            Left school. We

            Lurk late. We
            Strike straight. We

            Sing sin. We
            Thin gin. We

            Jazz June. We
            Die soon.

My Thoughts on the Piece

I liked the structure of providing short bursts of direct language in this poem. This structure created a sort of flow and rhythm for the poem. I like the last line a lot because it shows the consequences of living the “romanticized” teen party life.
